
Short biography
Prof. Ala’a H. Al-Muhtaseb is a Professor in the Department of Petroleum and Chemical Engineering at Sultan Qaboos University, Oman. His research is centred on sustainability and the environment, supported by significant industry-funded projects. His work covers waste valorization, circular economy, sustainable fuels, biohydrogen, biochar, wastewater treatment, and life cycle assessment (LCA), offering integrated solutions for the GCC energy transition and the UN SDGs.
He has led over 20 funded projects exceeding USD 2.5 million. His scholarly impact is evident through 18,500+ Scopus citations (h-index 72) and 22,500+ Google Scholar citations (h-index 80, i10-index 216).
Prof. Al-Muhtaseb is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC, UK) and was named among the Top 1% Highly Cited Researchers worldwide by Web of Science (Clarivate) in 2020, 2021, and 2024. He received Oman’s National Research Award in the Energy & Industry Sector in 2018 and 2019.
He served as Deputy Director of the Sustainable Energy Research Centre at SQU and currently contributes to academic publishing as Associate Editor of Detritus and Thermal Advances (Elsevier). He also serves on the editorial boards of Biomass Conversion and Biorefinery, Sustainable Energy Research, Bioresources and Bioprocessing, and on the advisory board of RSC Sustainability.
